From Winning the Work to Building It

My construction career started with a top-20 general contractor in the United States, where I joined the marketing department as a graphic designer. Within my first year I had taught myself 3D modeling and was building visuals for competitive pursuits. That work earned me a seat in the VDC department, and over seven years with the firm I rose to Senior VDC Specialist.

Along the way, something rare happened: the pursuits I helped win became the projects I BIM coordinated. The one I point to is the Kansas State University South End Zone. It was a long-shot pursuit — the client relationship had been strained by past experience, and our odds going in were low. So we put everything into how we told the story, and the approach and visuals we brought won the client over. I went on to coordinate the project, and it earned the firm's Innovative Project of the Year award. Pitching the plan in the interview room and then delivering it in the field taught me both sides of this business: the story that wins the job, and the model that builds it.

I was then recruited by a top 2 multifamily developer in the U.S. as a VDC Manager. For four years I coordinated multifamily projects and worked directly with developers, building the visuals and models that won over investors and equity partners.
